Now that the summer music festival scene is winding down (CMJ Music Marathon wraps up tomorrow), it’s time to declare the most popular music festival in the U.S.
While there shouldn’t be any doubt, Coachella is definitely the winner (at least according to Google Trends). See graph above for the comparison between it and the other four heavyweights: Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, Treasure Island Music Festival. I also looked at All Points West, Austin City Limits, CMJ, and Outside Lands, but it wasn’t close.
It’s interesting to see how steady each festival has gained in popularity. Coachella had an interesting spike in 2007; maybe because having Bjork, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rage Against the Machine headline was super awesome.

I seem to be coming across a new festival every other week. Pretty soon, there’ll be a festival going on every week.
